Bucknell Men's Swimming and Diving Comes Away from Quad Meet at Navy with Two Wins and One Loss

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Competing in a quad meet against three Patriot League opponents on Saturday, the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team came away from the day's action with two wins and one loss, defeating American, 236-57, and Lafayette, 202-92, but falling to host Navy, 159-125. The Bison are now 3-1 in dual meet competition on the year, 2-1 against league foes. Three different Bucknell swimmers picked up victories on the afternoon. Sophomore Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) took first in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of four minutes, 12.23 seconds, leading a one-two-three Bison sweep, followed by classmate Ben Leboza (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) in second (4:25.09) and junior Patrick Stummer (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) in third (4:19.35). In the 200 breast, members of the Orange and Blue captured the top four spots. Senior Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) led the way as he was first to reach the wall with a time of 2:25.96. Sophomore Brett Carey (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) took second in 2:28.82, while seniors Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Senior High) and Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) finished third and fourth with times of 2:31.04 and 2:33.03, respectively. Leriotis claimed first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.57 and senior Matthew McGraw (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) placed fourth in 5:00.44.
Freshman Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was the runner-up in the 200 back, finishing in 2:10.41, and classmate Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) took second in the 100 fly (59.54) with teammates junior Christopher Amato (East Norwich, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and sophomore Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) placing third (1:00.95) and fourth (1:00.06).
In addition to winning the 200 breast, Metcalf was the runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.72, while Carey was fourth in 1:08.81. Other top finishes for the Bison swimmers included junior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) capturing third in the 100 back (1:00.30), senior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) finishing fourth in the 50 free (24.83) and Fletcher posting a fourth-place showing in the 100 free (54.21). Bucknell took first in the 200 free relay as Peterman, Kawczenski, Fletcher and senior Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) combined for a time of 1:37.26. To open the meet, Kawczenski, Bennett, Steadman and Peterman finished with a runner-up time of 1:48.25 in the 200 medley relay. Junior Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) led the Bison divers, placing fourth in both the one-meter (247.50)and three-meter (250.45) events. Bucknell returns home next Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18, to play host to the Trials/Finals Invitational. Trials will begin at 10 a.m., and finals at 5 p.m., each day in Kinney Natatorium. |
