Bison Men's Swimming and Diving Stands Second at Bucknell Invitational
Nov. 16, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. -The Bison men's swimming and diving team had six of the top 13 finishers in the 200-yard IM and four different Bucknell swimmers advanced to the "A" final of their respective events as the Bison are in second place following Friday's first day of the three-day Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium. Mike Nicholson (200 IM) and Steve Grune (50 free) each finished third in an event, marking the best individual showings by a Bison. Yale (453 points), which won three of the six events contested Friday, is in first place. Bucknell (375 points) and Delaware (342.5) are second and third, respectively, in the seven-team meet. Nicholson led a deep Bison contingent in the 200 IM with his third-place finish. He won the prelim by .65 seconds and proceeded to shave 1.54 seconds from that time in the finals, but dropped two spots in the standings. Nevertheless, Bucknell claimed six of the top 13 spots in the 200 IM and had eight different swimmers advance to the finals. Will Rappaport (6th) and Christian Treat (7th) were in the 200 IM "A" final with Nicholson, while Ben Seketa (10th), Wes Marberry (11th) and Billy Krause (13th) were in the "B" final. Matt Hadley (18th) and Cameron James (22nd) advanced to the "C" final. Bucknell also had a number of scorers in the 500 free. Brian Phillips was the top finisher in 13th place and three of the four Bison scorers improved their placings from the morning prelims to the evening finals. Phillips went from 14th to 13th, while George Beatty went from 16th to 14th. Erik Heinemann jumped from 18th to 17th and his finals time of 4:38.09 was the eighth-fastest finals time of all swimmers. Grune also showed the ability to move up the results sheet in the finals of the 50 free. He finished seventh in the morning prelim and then touched the wall third in the finals. His time of 20.99 seconds in the finals left him .08 shy of joining the program's top-10 list for the first time. Patrick Alverman was the Bison's top diver on the day, finishing eighth in the one-meter competition. Grune, Trevor Reitz, Chris Ortiz and Bryce Suchomel teamed up on a second-place finish in the 200 free relay, marking Bucknell's best overall showing of the six events contested Friday. The Bucknell Invitational will continue Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Prelims are scheduled for 10 a.m, while finals are slated for 6 p.m. Team Scores New Top-10 Times Bucknell Results George Beatty Mike Davitt Collin Greene Steve Grune Matt Hadley Erik Heinemann Cameron James Edward Jew Jon Jones Billy Krause Marshall Lambert Wes Marberry JT Nangle Mike Nicholson Chris Ortiz Tim Perley Brian Phillips Will Rappaport Trevor Reitz Ben Seketa Jeff Shanley Matt Stevens Bryce Suchomel Christian Treat Daniel Wallace Tyler Wenzel 200 free relay 400 medley relay
