Bison Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubles to Kick Start 5-2 Win over Saint Francis
Feb. 2, 2013
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis improved to 13-0 all-time against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday, defeating the Red Flash 5-2 at the West Branch Tennis Club. The Bison swept doubles play and Nick Bybel, Evan Zimmer and Josh Katten opened their dual campaigns with two wins each. Bucknell made quick work of Saint Francis in doubles. The closest match came at the top of the lineup, but even that score was just 8-3 in favor of the Bison as Bybel and Katten defeated Sergio Carvajal and Washi Gervais. Kelly Morque and Zimmer played at No. 2 doubles and Aidan Lynch and Chris Tortora were at No. 3 as both claimed 8-2 decisions over their opponents. Zimmer had a much more difficult time in his singles match but battled back for his second victory of the day against Carvajal. After dropping the first set 6-3, Zimmer bounced back for a 6-3, 10-8 win after the super tiebreak.
Katten's match at fourth singles was no cake walk either, but the senior still dispatched Juan Pardo in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. With both his wins today, Katten is now firmly in the top three at Bucknell in career singles, doubles and combined victories. The success against the Red Flash ties him for third with Mark Malloy with 62 singles wins, ties him for second with Gregg Cohenca with 70 doubles wins and keeps him in sole possession of third in combined wins with 132.
Getting through their tests more easily was Bybel at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Andres Rosa, and Kyle Rosen at the sixth position. Rosen blanked mat Jursevich, 6-0, 6-0. Bucknell will be back in action Feb. 8-9 for a pair of matches in Pittsburgh. The Bison will face Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne during their weekend of play.
