Bucknell Men's Tennis Falls 5-2 at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Asher Salam and Aaron Saperstein won three-set singles matches but Lehigh managed to pull out the rest of the close contests to score a 5-2 victory over Bucknell in a Patriot League match that was played indoors due to rain. The Bison fell to 7-8 overall and 1-4 in Patriot League play, while Lehigh improved to 7-7, 1-3. The Mountain Hawks swept the three doubles matches to begin the day with a 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles Ryan Lloyd and Brad Nelson scraped by Bucknell's Nick Denefrio and Matt Pikus 9-7. Ty Esler and Alfredo Fernandex-Concha topped Salam and Joe Menezes 8-5 at No. 2, and Jon Swanson and Randall Smalley defeated Saperstein and Gerald DiChiara 8-3 at No. 3. Bucknell claimed victories at third and sixth singles. Salam was a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 winner over Swanson at No. 3, while Saperstein outlasted Nelson 6-3, 2-6 (10-8) on court six. Esler and Lloyd both won three-set tilts to help Lehigh secure its first league win of the year. At No. 1, Esler defeated Denefrio 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, and at fourth singles Lloyd topped Menezes 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Smalley and Fernandez-Concha also won in straight sets for the Mountain Hawks. Bucknell returns to action on Tuesday, April 18, hosting Navy at 4 p.m. in the Bison's final Patriot League regular-season match.
