April 13, 2010
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis won its second straight match, taking a 6-1 decision over Robert Morris at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Tuesday. The Bison swept doubles play to get off on the right foot and improve their overall record to 7-11.
The Colonials (3-17) hung around in doubles, but the Bison never really relinquished control of any of the matches. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) defeated Igor Neves and David Pinto, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. The second doubles slot had an identical outcome with Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) winning 8-4 over Daniel Becker and Liran Braun.
Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Evan Zimmer (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) won their sixth doubles match in the last seven tries. The freshman duo won 8-5 over Andre Coiro and Aaron Haas in the most recent outing.
Singles action followed suit for the Bison with the lone hiccup coming at the No. 3 position. Cohenca won his first match when playing at No. 1 singles, defeating Neves 6-4, 6-4. Katten needed three sets but pulled out his first career win at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Pinto.
Making just his second appearance in singles play this spring, Marcil grabbed the 6-0, 6-3 victory over Becker. Also earning wins against the Colonials were Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) and Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy). Maxson defeated Braun, 7-5, 6-4, while Bogle won over Haas, 6-4, 6-2.
Bucknell will have little time to prepare for its next match. The Bison will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., for a 3 p.m. match against Lehigh tomorrow.
