Bucknell Men's Tennis Sends Athletes To Semifinal Round After Day Two At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick), junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade), freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School), and senior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./Canaan) of the Bucknell men's tennis team made the semifinal round in their respective flights, to be played on Sunday, after day two of the Northeast Tournament at Brown. In the No. 3 singles flight, Hascoe faced Trenton Alenik of Villanova for a 6-3, 6-0 win Saturday. Hascoe will move on to play the top seed in the No. 3 singles flight, Kendrick Au of Brown, Sunday. On Friday, Hascoe won his match against Justin Seow of Farleigh Dickinson, 6-4, 6-2, to move on to the quarterfinals round Saturday. Brenner played James Murphy of Lafayette in the quarterfinal round of the No. 4 singles round Saturday for a 6-2, 6-0 win. Brenner will face Josh Girling of Farleigh Dickinson on Sunday for the semifinal round. Brenner started the weekend off with a win over Antonio Oliver of Marist, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. Malloy played Scott Schulman of Brandeis in the sixth singles flight for a win (6-1, 6-0) and will play John Magliano of Villanova Sunday in the semifinal round. Malloy opened the weekend with a win over James Sparacio of Lafayette, 6-3, 7-6, Friday. In the seventh singles flight, Young defeated James Pellechi of Colgate, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinal round after defeating Mayer Kassety of Brandeis, 6-3, 6-1, Friday. Young will face Alex Lesser of Villanova on Sunday in the semifinal round.
After falling to Loic Sessagesimi of Marist, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, in the No. 1 singles flight on Friday, senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) faced Jeff Cote of Rhode Island Saturday, and won the match 6-2. Reibeisen will play Martin MacIntyre of Colgate tomorrow. Bucknell's No. 1 doubles team of junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) and Brenner played Michael Kalfayan and Tim Wu of Harvard in the semifinal round Saturday. The duo defeated top-seeded Sam Garland and Noah Gardner of Brown to open the Northeast Tournament (8-6) and picked up an 8-5 win over Brett Kraft and James Murphy of Lafayette in the quarterfinal round Friday. In the semifinal, Sandburg and Brenner dropped the match to Kalfayan and Wu of Harvard, 8-5. Sandburg went on to face Christian Coley of Marist in the second singles bracket after defeating top-seeded Tim Wu of Harvard on Friday, 6-2, 6-2. Sandburg fell to Coley, 6-4, 6-2, in Saturday's round. "I think we're playing pretty well overall," said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt, "We had a couple of solid doubles wins and our doubles teams will only continue to get stronger. I've been really impressed with performances from several of our players, especially Ryan Sandburg who has won 8 straight matches and defeated a solid player from Harvard on Friday. We usually do pretty well in this tournament but this year we're looking to walk away with several titles." The Northeast Tournament at Brown will wrap up on Sunday. |
