Oct. 15, 2012
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis combined for a record of 15-7 and Evan Zimmer made the jump up to fourth on the program all-time top-10 list in wins at the Lehigh Invitational last weekend. The Bison took on Delaware, Lehigh and Loyola (Md.) in the three-day event at Bethlehem, Pa. Included in Bucknell's wins total were four victories against the Mountain Hawks. Of the team's 15 total wins, Jonathan DeFrancesch and Chris Tortora accounted for seven. The duo teamed up to go 3-0 in doubles, including a close 9-7 decision over Lehigh's Andrew Krentz and Tumur Chernykh. Both Bison also finished 2-0 in singles action. Zimmer and Josh Katten teamed up again in doubles and finished 2-1 with wins over Loyola and Lehigh. Along with a 1-1 mark in singles, Zimmer now has a career combined record of 119-63. That wins total moves him into fourth all-time at Bucknell, three spots higher than where he entered the weekend. Next on the all-time combined wins list is Katten, who was 1-0 in singles. Katten has a career record of 130-77. Kelly Morque and Octavio Canibe saw their six-match doubles winning streak come to an end against Lehigh. Morque and Canibe won the Bucknell Invitational the last time the Bison competed and then defeated Delaware's Nolan Gelman and Evan Andrews 8-5, followed by Harrison Kunkel and Keishi Goto of Loyola, 8-4. The streak ended in an 8-2 loss to the Mountain Hawks' Matt Savran and Jeremy Kochman. Select Bison will continue their fall season this weekend at the ITA Regional Championships in Charlottesville, Va. Katten and Zimmer received the automatic bid in doubles, while Morque was the team's automatic qualifier in singles. Zimmer will attempt to make the main draw in singles as well when qualifying rounds begin on Thursday. Play continues through Monday, Oct. 22.
