On May 6, 2000, the Bucknell women's outdoor track & field team won the 2000 Patriot League Championship under the direction of head coach Art Gulden. The championship title brought the total number of conference championships which have been earned by Bucknell men's and women's cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field teams under Gulden's guidance over the last 30 years, to an extremely impressive 66.

Following last year's meets, Gulden was named the Patriot League's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year for the seventh time in his career. Overall, he has been named Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year 19 times in the 10-year history of the conference.

Gulden has brought Bucknell's cross country and track and field program to a level of national prominence and league dominance. Over just the last three years, Bucknell has been crowned champion in men's cross country and women's indoor track three times, women's cross country and women's outdoor track twice, and the Bison have been consistent runner-ups in both men's indoor and outdoor track.

Bucknell alumni returned to Lewisburg last spring for a very special celebration marking Art Gulden's 30th year at Bucknell. Five years earlier the alumni did the same, honoring Gulden that night with the announcement of the Art Gulden Scholarship, and it is a worthwhile tribute, for Gulden has taken a program virtually from scratch and, through years of committment, effort and sacrifice, has molded it into one of the most respected in the East.

Gulden's men's cross country teams won 18 straight conference titles between 1975-92, and have won three IC4A championships. Arguably Bucknell's most nationally-accomplished program, the Bison men's cross country program has qualified for the NCAA Championships nine times in the last 20 years, and at one point compiled a remarkable dual-meet winning streak of 167 -- spanning 16 years.

Last fall it was the women's turn. For the first time in school history the women earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Championship where they finished 24th in the nation.

In addition, last year both the men's and women's cross country teams, the women's indoor track & field team, and the women's outdoor track & field team claimed Patriot League titles.

Fiercely competitive and equally tenacious, Gulden's teams reflect his personality. His training regimen, developmental program and competitive philosophy consistently pay dividends as the Bison regularly make phenomenal improvements in their college careers. Primarily, though, Gulden stresses education, and his teams regularly boast among the highest grade-point averages of any Bucknell teams. In fact, 61 track and field student-athletes were named to either the Patriot League Honor Roll or the University Dean's List in the 2000 spring semester, and three individuals were selected as Patriot League Scholar-Athletes over the course of the year.

Many of Gulden's runners continue to race together long after graduation, and the Bison have enjoyed outstanding success in the Alamo Alumni Runs, a series of road races sponsored by Alamo Rent-A-Car in which alumni from numerous schools compete as a team representing their alma mater. Bucknell has also made its presence felt with outstanding performances at the annual Hood-to-Coast Relay the past three years.

A 1964 graduate of Rutgers, Gulden received his master's degree at Rutgers a year later. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army for two years, then returned to Rutgers for three years before coming to Bucknell.

Gulden has served as chairman of the TAC Eastern Regional Olympic Development Committee, as a member of the NCAA Cross Country Executive Committee, and as a member of the U.S. Olympic Development Committee for Distance Running.

He is past president of the IC4A Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association and has been the District II Coach of the Year five times. The president of the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association in 1991-92, Gulden coached the U.S. national team at the World Cross Country Championships in Norway in 1989.
