Bucknell's Field Events Shine on Last Day of IC4A/ECAC Championships
May 17, 2009
PRINCETON, N.J.--On the final day of the IC4A/ECAC Championships, the Bison's track and field programs were lead by the strong performances in the field events. Bucknell's third day of compeition was highlighted by junior Kyle Anthony finishing third in the IC4A final of the triple jump and freshman Sarah Bella making the final of the women's shot put. Anthony was the only male scorer of the meet for the Bison, who finished tied for 37th place with six points. The Bison women finished with four points for a tie in 46th place. "Going into the last day of competition, I knew we had not done as well as we expected and all I wanted to do was score at least one point for our team," Anthony said. "These points weren't mine, they were ours." Anthony's leap of 49 feet, 11 ¾ inches fell painfully short of putting him into the 50-foot club, but still produced another huge personal-best performance and bettered Anthony's position as the second-best triple jumper in Bucknell history. "Kyle has been very consistent in the triple jump this outdoor season," Bison head coach Kevin Donner said. "To get a personal record and third at this prestigious meet is quite an honor." Other big men's marks included freshman Tom Barr and junior Timothy Medlock taking 19th and 20th in the shot put. Barr produced a best throw of 50-4 ½ and Medlock, the recent school record holder, threw for 50-1 ¾ to lead the Bison in the throws on the last day of competition. Bucknell got itself into its second final of the day with the help of Bella, who recently set the school record in the shot put at the Patriot League Championships. Bella produced a best throw of 44-5 ¼ and was the third-best freshman overall.
"It was great to see Sarah make the final in the shot put," Donner said. "The past two meets have been outstanding for her." Junior Amy Mantush competed in two events on the final day, the high jump and triple jump. Mantush had a day's best jump of 36-0 ¾ in the triple and was unable to clear the 5-4 opening height in the high jump. The Bison have next weekend off before returning to competition May 29-30 at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Greensboro, N.C. |
