Bucknell Track Teams Capture Opening Day Invitational at Gerhard Fieldhouse

The Bison men post 12 first-place finishes and the women notch 10 en route to dominating victories.

Lewisburg, Pa. --- The Bucknell men and women claimed first place at the Opening Day Invitational held at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Bison men posted 12 first-place finishes and scored a team total of 244 points, outdistancing runner-up St. Francis-PA (146) by nearly a hundred points. The Bucknell women had 10 first-place showings, and finished with 212 points, besting runner-up East Stroudsburg by more than 100 points.

In addition to the dozen event titles by the Bison men, four individuals placed on the school's all-time Top-10 performers chart. Senior Ryan Stairs (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) won the 35-lb weight with a toss of 58'8 ¼" and moved into second-place on the school's all-time list. Senior captain James Hollins (Feeding Hills, Mass./Northfield-Mt. Hermon) moved into third place on the school's all-time long jump chart with a leap of 23'5 ¼", and freshman Noel Powell (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) cracked the all-time list in the 200-meter dash jumping into fourth-place with a time of 22.55. Junior captain David Gabriel (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) closed out the outstanding individual performances by equaling his seventh-place all-time performance in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.52.

The women had five individuals, in six different events, place on the all-time performances in chart. Freshman Jamie Lilien (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) cracked the chart in both the 55-meter high hurdles and the long jump. Her time of 8.50 in the trials of the 55-m HH places her third on the all-time list, and her jump of 18'2 3/4" in the long jump moved her into a tie for fourth. Classmate Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) moved into eighth-place in the 20-lb weight with a heave of 45'8", while sophomore Charity Brady (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) moved into sixth-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.48. Junior Samantha Klotz (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) cleared 8'4" in the pole vault to move into fourth-place on the school's all-time performers list, while classmate LaTonya McSwain (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:19.20, placing her eighth on the all-time chart.

The men's and women's track & field teams will take some time off for final exams, and resume competition again on Saturday, January 6 when they host St. Joseph's, Lafayette and Maryland-Eastern Shore at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse.
