LEWISBURG, Pa. - Another early-season meet resulted in another pair of honors for Bucknell men's track and field's Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) and Christian Lupica (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep). Barr was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week and Lupica the Rookie of the Week for the second time this winter as they helped the Bison to a strong showing at the Bucknell Mini Meet last Saturday.
Both athletes were named athletes of the week by the Patriot League on Dec. 5 following their only other meet of the year. It is the second set of awards of each Bison's career.
On Saturday Barr won the shot put for the second time this season. The senior threw a career-best 53 feet, 9 inches to set yet another IC4A Championship-qualifying mark. It also moved him one step closer to the Bucknell school record. Currently ranked second in program history, Barr is less than four inches shy of the number one mark at Bucknell.
Barr also finished second in the weight throw just behind teammate Leonard Joseph. His 56-6 ¾ mark earned him an IC4A-qualifying mark in that event as well. Barr ranks fourth all-time at Bucknell in the weight throw after recording a personal-best 59-6 ¼ at the Bison Opener last month.
Like his award-winning teammate, Lupica improved his placing in the Bucknell record books as well. The freshman tied for first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31 seconds. That time, which equaled the mark put up by teammate and current school record-holder Robert Arent in the same race, ranks fourth in program history. Lupica also took second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.47 seconds and was just seven-hundredths of a second off the first-place mark.
Bucknell will have a week off before returning to the track for the Gulden Invitational on Jan. 21. The meet at Gerhard Fieldhouse is set for a 10 a.m. start.
