LEWISBURG, Pa. – Although it is still easy in the season, Bucknell track and field will compete in one of its biggest meets of the season, taking on nearly 30 schools at the William & Mary Colonial Relays this weekend. The Bison will make the trip to Williamsburg, Va., and make their first appearance at the meet on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. Action continues at the same time on Saturday. A live webcast of select events and live results will be available both days.
“The Colonials Relays is always one of our major meets during the outdoor season. We busted the rust last week after the long layover between the indoor and outdoor seasons, and now we are trying to score as many points as possible and walk away with a high finish in a large meet,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “Being one month out from the Patriot League Championships, this meet will start to narrow our team down.
“Once again, we are not worried about times and distances, but with a team score on the line, we want to see our people fighting for points,” Donner continued. “Times and distances will eventually come.”
Bucknell did plenty of fighting for points at the 2011 Colonial Relays. The men’s squad won the meet, besting 35 other schools, while the women were third out of 40. This spring, 32 Division I All-Americans are entered in various events at Zable Stadium.

- The following events are scheduled for Friday’s live webcast at tribeathletics.com: 400, 100- and 110-meter hurdles, 800 and 100 semifinals. Saturday’s schedule includes: sprint medley relay, 100 finals, 4x200, 4x1,500 and 4x400. Time permitting, coverage of some jumping events may be added.

THROWS
- When Bucknell competed at the Towson Invitational last Saturday, the meet was not scored. Had it been, however, the Bison would have collected many of its points in the throws. Bucknell recorded 32 top-10 finishes, including 17 in the top five. Rebecca Misko (Morristown, N.J./Madison) was the lone winner on the women’s side, taking gold in the discus. The men won three of four throws events, including Luke Webster (Pataskala, Ohio/Newark Catholic) in the discus, Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS) in the hammer and Laddie Trees (Washington, D.C./Deerfield Academy (Mass.)) in the javelin.
- Bucknell claimed eight of the top 10 spots in the men’s hammer throw at Towson.
- Barr was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. In addition to winning the hammer throw, he also set the school record in the shot put (54-2 ½). Barr enters the Colonial Relays as the top seed in the shot.
- Trees was also an award winner on Monday, earning the distinction as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Trees’ 208-7 in the javelin earned him the win, an IC4A-qualifying mark, the seventh-best throw in program history and the top seed at this weekend’s Colonial Relays.
- Misko may have taken gold in the discus last weekend, but Abby Monaghan (La Plata, Md./La Plata) was right on her heels. Monaghan was .01 meters behind her teammate. Joining the duo in the top three at Towson were also Kathryn Wahls (Spencerport, N.Y./Brockport) in the hammer throw and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) in the javelin.
JUMPS/POLE VAULT
- The Bucknell men totaled 10 victories across all events at the Towson Invitational, and Ray Holmes (Campbell, N.Y./Campbell-Savona Central) was the only two-time winner. The sophomore led the field in the long jump (20-10 ½) and the triple jump (45-1 ½). It was the first time in his career that he won both events at the same meet.
- Daniel Markwalter (Vienna, Va./Thomas Jefferson S&T) won the pole vault, clearing 14-9. It was his first win since the 2010 Bison Outdoor Classic. Then a freshman, Markwalter was the victor in the college division of the pole vault, also clearing 14-9.
- Yanelis Mestre (Westborough, Mass./Nobel and Grennough) made her own inroads in the pole vault. The freshman cleared 11-1 ¾ for fourth place at the meet. The height also made her the first Bison to record a new program top-10 mark this outdoor season. She now ranks sixth in program history.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
- Bucknell collected a quartet of top-three finishes in the sprints, two on the men’s side and two on the women’s. The Bison showed their depth in those races, as each finish was recorded by a different runner. Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) won the 100 meters, and Kamal Riley (Hyde Park, Mass./Charlestown) was third in the 200. Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover) and Jennifer Zymet (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) were third in the 100 and 400, respectively.
- The Bison had similar depth in the hurdles. Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) won the 400-meter hurdles and was second in the 110 hurdles. Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township) also claimed top-five finishes in both hurdle races. On the women’s side, Taylor Funk (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) took second in the 100 hurdles and Allison Daley (Menlo Park, Calif./Burlingame) was fourth at the 400 distance.
- Daley’s fourth-place finish in 1:06.85 came in her first career hurdle race. The freshman ran just twice during the indoor campaign, once in the 200 meters and again in the 800 meters.
MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE
- The middle distance unit traveled in packs at Towson. In the men’s 1,500 meters, all top four places went to the Bison and those four finished within 1.1 seconds of each other. Dave Brown (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) was first (4:00.56), followed by Chris Oesterlin (Nahant, Mass./St. John’s Prep) in second (4:00.57), D.J. Krystek (Pitcairn, Pa./Gateway Senior) in third (4:00.91) and Andrew Garcia-Garrison (Detroit, Mich./Catholic Central) in fourth (4:01.57).
- Hana Casalnova (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) completed the other half of Bucknell’s 1,500-meter sweep. The sophomore finished in 4:38.19, nearly two full seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Emily Waksmunski (Carrolltown, Pa./Bishop Carroll) and Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) were also fourth and fifth, respectively.
- Bucknell’s distance runners were relatively quiet last weekend, but John Dugan (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) and Ali Foote (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made some noise in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Susquehanna’s Jim Taylor Invitational. Dugan earned the win in 9:27.35, while Foote was fifth in the women’s race in 11:52.14.
LOOKING AHEAD
The next time Bucknell is back on the track, it will be at its own stadium. The Bison Outdoor Classic is schedule for April 13-15 at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Friday’s action includes the beginning of the decathlon at noon. The full meet schedule begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
