Eighteen Bison Named to All-Patriot League Track and Field Teams
May 6, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - A total of 18 of the 91 places on the men's and women's All-Patriot League First and Second Teams went to Bucknell competitors, including 12 members of the Patriot League champion women's team. The women outscored runner-up Army 182-160, while the men finished third behind host and titlist Army and runner-up Navy. In addition to the student-athletes honored, head coach Kevin Donner was named the Patriot League Women's Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. Maria Garcia (Providence, R.I./Hope) was the Women's Field Athlete of the Meet for the first time in her career, and received her fourth-straight first-team honor after winning the hammer throw each year. She broke the Patriot League Championship hammer record with this year's 202'8" toss. Fellow Rhode Islander Tolu Fayanjuola (Providence, R.I./Classical) received first-team honors for the first time in her career after winning the 100 meters, setting a PLC record (19'8 ¼") in the long jump, and earning a silver in the high jump. Pole vault winner Angie Hall (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) set a new PLC record and earned first-team honors with a 12'3 ½" vault, matching the height of second-teamer and silver medalist Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler), who cleared the standard in more tries. Ann Doty (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) earns first-team honors for taking a gold in the triple jump. Bucknell had seven more second-teamers in addition to Buczko, including 400 meter silver medalist Amy Calvo (Trenton, N.J./Lawrence), 10K runner-up Katie Pfeifer (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville), javelin runner-up Megan Frederick (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich), and four members of the silver-medalist 4x800 relay team, including Jennifer Marsh (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield), Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and Jennifer Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley). Bricker also won a silver in the triple jump. All six Bucknell men honored were on the league's second team. Greg Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) finished second in the 10K, while Mike Mellas (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) was second in the decathlon. The four members of the silver-medalist 4x100 relay team were honored, including Justin Crane (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus), Ryan Newberger (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive), Nick Novotny (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) and Noel Powell (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua). Powell also took the silver in the long jump. The Bison men and women will compete next on Saturday at the Penn State Open in hopes of earning more IC4A/ECAC qualifying times. The IC4A/ECAC meet will be held in New Haven, Conn., the following weekend, followed by NCAA Regional and Championship competitions in the weeks ahead. Six Bison have already qualified for NCAA Regional competition.
