Bucknell Trackster Mike Mellas Earns Place on Academic All-District Team
June 3, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior Mike Mellas (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute), a multi-event athlete and hurdler on the track and field squad, was honored on the CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-District II Cross Country/Track and Field Team along with only nine other athletes from the Mid-Atlantic states. Mellas has a 3.83 GPA while majoring in theater. On the track, he earned a silver medal in the decathlon at the Patriot League Track and Field Championships where the Bison took third as a team. Mellas is now eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be voted on in the coming weeks and announced June 22. Seven of the 10 honored athletes are from the state of Pennsylvania, though Mellas was one of only two Patriot League athletes in District II so honored. Navy's Eric Eckstrand also appears on the roster. District II covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be eligible, the athlete must have been a varsity starter or key reserve and maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale. Only sophomores and higher were eligible for nomination, and athletes must have spent at least one year at the school.
