Former Bucknell Track and Field Star Places Fifth at U.S. Olympic Trials
July 13, 2004 SACRAMENTO, Calif. - James Heizman, a 1996 graduate of Bucknell, competed in the hammer throw at this week's United States Olympic Track and Field Trials and placed fifth in the 12-person finals to narrowly miss qualifying for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. A 1996 All-American in the hammer throw, Heizman landed a toss of 229-8 on Monday to finish just over eight feet behind third-place Travis Nutter. The top-three finishers earned the right to represent the U.S. at the Olympics next month. During Saturday's qualifying round, Heizman registered a distance of 225-10 to place eighth in the field of 24 throwers and earn the right to advance to the finals. Heizman etched his name into the record books on numerous occasions while at Bucknell. He is the school record holder in the hammer throw, landing a heave of 209-3 in 1996. That mark is nearly 15 feet farther than that of second-place Ryan Stairs. Heizman also ranks third in school history in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 57-7.
During his tenure as a Bison, Heizman experienced team success along with his individual achievements. In eight Patriot League Championship meets during his four years at Bucknell, the Bison claimed one title and six runner-up finishes.
