Bucknell Cruises to 17-1 Victory Over Queens in Men's Water Polo
Sept. 2, 2007
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) led 10 Bucknell goal scorers with a season-high four tallies as the Bucknell men's water polo team easily defeated Queens (N.Y.) 17-1 Sunday afternoon at the Navy Labor Day Open. The Bison concluded their weekend with a 2-1 record as they scored at least 17 goals for the fourth time in the last two years. Masterson keyed the Bucknell offense with his four goals, while Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) chipped in three and Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach) and Andrew Nelson (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) each contributed a pair of goals. Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Peter O'Keefe (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) were not among the Bison to net goals, but they each registered two assists. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) paced the squad with three assists to go along with one goal as he tied Masterson for the team lead in points with four. Bucknell jumped out to a 4-1 first quarter lead and never looked back against Queens as the Knights failed to score another goal the rest of the way. The Bison defense played a part in that as it collected 17 steals. Seven different players tallied at least two steals, with Roslyn's three thefts leading the way. Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) and Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) each played a half in goal with Belenky earning his 31st consecutive start. Each goalie made a pair of saves in his 16 minutes of playing time.
After a 2-1 weekend where its only loss was to No. 2 Cal, the defending national champion, Bucknell will return to action next weekend at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will play Fordham, Iona, Mercyhurst and the same Queens team during the two-day event.
