Men's Water Polo Drops a Pair at Navy Invitational
Sept. 6, 2001
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - College Water Polo Association rival Johns Hopkins got the best of the Bucknell men's water polo team, defeating the Bison 7-6 in the first game of the day on Sunday, September 2, at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The Orange and Blue then faced Puerto Rico in their final game of the tournament, falling to the team 12-9 for an eighth-place finish. Against Johns Hopkins, Bucknell got a squad-high two goals from junior Chris Saxton on five attempts. Four other Bison players got involved in the scoring, tallying one goal each. Sophomore Jamie Saettele and freshmen James Danforth, Nick Ferring and Aaron Platshon all added to their season totals in the scoring column. Platshon and classmate Elliot Benoist both added an assist in the contest, while Danforth added to his team-high steal total with four in the game. In the Puerto Rico game, several players got involved offensively, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit in the 12-9 loss for eighth place. Senior co-captain Ryan McCarty and junior Adam Yerkes led the team with two goals each. Benoist, Danforth, Saettele, Saxton and freshman Sam Sullivan each tallied one score in the contest, as well. Senior co-captain David Kennedy was in goal for the Orange and Blue, stopping nine Puerto Rico shots, despite allowing 12 goals.
The Bison fall to 1-3 on the season. Bucknell is idle for a week before hosting the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16. The Orange and Blue face Gannon at 11:00 a.m. on September 15, before challenging George Washington at 8:00 p.m. that evening.
