Bucknell Men's Water Polo Goes 1-1 on Second Day of Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Bucknell men's water polo team continued its schedule against nationally ranked programs, facing 18th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday, September 8, at the Navy Open, before taking on MIT, the sixth-ranked program in Division III. The Bison fell to St. Francis (N.Y.) 19-7, before picking up their first win of the season in an 8-6 victory over MIT. Against the Terriers of St. Francis (N.Y.), junior Scott Afzal and freshman Bradley Roslyn scored two goals each to lead the offensive attack. Afzal also tallied two assists, while senior Chris Saxton added two helpers as well. Also netting goals for the Orange and Blue in the contest were senior Daniel Lonnerdal, and sophomores Elliot Benoist and James Danforth. Lonnerdal added an assist to the scoring column, as well as Roslyn, freshman Lars Weborg and sophomore goalkeeper Ernest Martin. Martin, who played the second half of the contest in net, recorded four saves. The starter, freshman Trevor Mullins, registered four stops as well through one half of play. Bucknell finally got on the winning side with an 8-6 decision against MIT. Junior Jamie Saettele, Benoist and Roslyn each contributed with two goals, while Afzal and Lonnerdal tallied once in the victory. Saettele broke out offensively, also adding two assists.
Danforth had a solid game both offensively and defensively for the Orange and Blue, assisting twice, recording a team-high five steals, and registering two ejections drawn.
Martin played the entire game in goal for Bucknell, registering a season-high 10 saves. Bucknell stands at 1-3 overall after the first weekend of competition. The Bison are back in action on Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, at the Princeton Invitational. BU's first opponent is Queens at 9:00 a.m. on September 14. |
