CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Courtesy of three wins this weekend, the 20th-ranked Bucknell men's water polo team advanced to the ECAC championship game Sunday afternoon against No. 9 St. Francis (N.Y.), but came away with a 13-7 loss to the Terriers. The second-place showing in the 10-team field is the best ever for the Bison who had placed third on two other occasions.

The two teams played evenly through the first quarter, ending the first seven minutes of play knotted at 2-2. However, St. Francis scored five goals in each of the next two periods to take a commanding 12-4 lead. Bucknell came back with three goals in the final quarter to cut the final deficit to just six.

Six different Bison scored in the contest as Jay Danforth led the way with two goals. Elliot Benoist, Sean Robinson, Kyle Roslyn, Nick Ferring and Jared Gray added single goals for Bucknell (9-3, 3-0), which was aiming for its best 12-game start to a season since 1984.

Along with his goal, Benoist led the team with a pair of assists. He leads the team with 35 points this season. Aaron Platshon added in one helper of his own.

Trevor Mullins went the distance in goal and made five saves. In the four games over the weekend, Mullins stopped 21 shots and allowed just 27 goals.

Bucknell will return to league play next Saturday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md. The Bison will face George Washington at 12 p.m. before traveling north to Baltimore to battle Johns Hopkins at 5 p.m.
