Bucknell Men's Water Polo Goes 0-2 on Second Day of Santa Clara Rodeo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –One day after upending No. 19 Santa Clara, the Bucknell men’s water polo team dropped a pair of close decisions on the second day of the Santa Clara Rodeo. The 17th-ranked Bison lost to Cal Baptist by a 6-5 score and followed that with a 9-6 loss to No. 13 Air Force.
Bucknell (10-12) relinquished a fourth-quarter lead against Cal Baptist, while it faced a 5-1 halftime deficit against the Falcons.
The opener against the Lancers was tied 4-4 at halftime and the Bison took a 5-4 lead in the third quarter, however Cal Baptist scored the tying goal with 6:56 to play and tallied the winning goal with 5:01 on the clock. Bucknell did not score over the final 13:13 of play.
It was a different story in the nightcap as Air Force led 7-1 in the third quarter. Bucknell tallied four times in the fourth to make it a three-goal margin at the end.
Bucknell’s scoring throughout the day was very balanced as nine different players combined to score the team’s 11 goals. The only multi-goal scorers were Jack Else and Nick Hale, who posted two goals apiece against Cal Baptist.
Else added nine ejections drawn on the day to bring his season tally to 99. He entered the weekend as the program’s single-season and career leader in ejections drawn.
Goalie Matt Napleton held both opponents under 10 goals, making it five consecutive Bucknell foes that have not reached double figures. He totaled 31 saves on the day, including 16 in the opener opposite the Lancers.
Bucknell will wrap up play at the Santa Clara Rodeo Sunday with games against No. 4 Stanford (11 a.m. ET) and No. 16 UC Davis (4:20 p.m. ET).
