No. 19 Bucknell Men's Water Polo Falls to No. 15 Princeton, 11-9
Oct. 24, 2008
PRINCETON, N.J. – Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) scored four goals and dished out two assists and Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) added three goals, but the No. 19 Bucknell men’s water polo team was unable to win for the sixth time in seven games as No. 15 Princeton defeated the Bison 11-9 Friday night at DeNunzio Pool.
Bucknell (13-12, 4-4 CWPA Southern Divison) had defeated Princeton four times in the last five meetings, including twice in a row.
The Bison, who arrived at the pool minutes before the scheduled 7 p.m. start time due to traffic, trailed by just one goal at halftime, but were outscored 5-4 in the second half.
With his six points, Hyden now has a team-high 106 points this season. It is the most points by a Bucknell player since Kevin Permisohn netted 112 points in 2000.
Kalter’s three goals helped him become the fifth Bison this year to eclipse the 20-point plateau, while Alex Lovell (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who was the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week after making 47 saves in five games last weekend, stopped six shots in goal. He also recorded one steal on the defensive side of the pool.
Bucknell, which has 10 of its 12 losses this season to ranked opponents, will wrap up its road regular-season schedule Saturday morning at DeNunzio Pool against No. 18 Brown. The Bison defeated the Bears 11-9 earlier this year at the ECAC Championship.
BUCKNELL 2 3 2 2 -9
PRINCETON 3 3 2 3 -11
Goals: Hyden (4), Kalter (3), Lovell, Lampley.
