Bucknell Men's Water Polo Beats Johns Hopkins, 9-6, in League Championship
Oct. 31, 2003
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team, hosting the Southern Division Championship for the first time in school history, got the weekend off to a good start with a 9-6 victory over Johns Hopkins on Friday, October 31. The win over the Blue Jays was Bucknell's first since the final game of the 2001 season, snapping a string of seven consecutive losses to JHU. Sophomore Bradley Roslyn scored a career-high five goals to lead the Orange and Blue in an intense game in front of a large parents' weekend crowd. Bucknell trailed 2-1 after one quarter of play. The Bison came back with three goals in the second, two coming from Roslyn and one from junior Aaron Platshon, to take a 4-3 lead at halftime. The two teams matched each other in the third, 2-2, for a 6-5 game entering the fourth. BU jumped out to a 7-5 lead just 45 seconds into the final frame, and held the Blue Jays off for nearly four more minutes before James Singleton made it a one goal game again with 2:20 to play. That was all the Bison would allow, however, coming up with key defensive plays down the stretch. Junior Jay Danforth grabbed one of his game-high four steals with just under a minute to play and passed the ball to Platshon on the break. Platshon found Roslyn with 45 second left in the game to give Bucknell an 8-6 cushion. Just seconds after the restart, sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Mullins came up with a save on a point-blank shot, and the Orange and Blue just had to run out the clock. Junior Elliot Benoist added an insurance goal with just four seconds left for the 9-6 final.
Bucknell improves to 7-17 overall. The Bison will face Grove City at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 1. Johns Hopkins falls to 14-15 overall.
