Bucknell Men's Water Polo Climbs to 17th in National Poll
Sept. 29, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team's second-place finish at the ECAC Championships this past weekend in Cambridge, Mass., vaulted the Bison to 17th in the national ranking, released Wednesday by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. The Bison, who compiled a 3-1 record over the weekend with wins over Queens, No. 13 Navy and Harvard, leapfrogged Redlands, Air Force and Cal-Baptist in the poll as they climbed from six points last week to 25 points this week. Bucknell's 9-3 record is its best through 12 games since posting the same mark in 1999. If the Bison had been able to defeat St. Francis (N.Y.) in Sunday's championship game, they would have equaled their best start since the 1984 campaign. All three of Bucknell's losses this season have been to teams ranked in the top-10 at the time they played. The Terriers, who were ranked ninth last week and jumped to seventh in this week's poll, claimed the ECAC championship with a 13-7 victory in the championship game, while Bucknell took the second-place trophy for its highest-ever finish. The Bison had placed third on two other occasions. Junior Bradley Roslyn posted the most impressive individual performance of the three-day ECAC Championships when he scored five goals during Saturday's 8-6 upset of Navy, which appears just two spots ahead of Bucknell in this week's rankings. For the tournament, Roslyn totaled nine goals, two assists and two steals. He stands tied for second on the team with Elliot Benoist with 19 goals. Jay Danforth's 22 goals paces the team. Trevor Mullins also had an outstanding weekend. Playing with an injured hand, the junior made 21 saves and allowed only 27 goals in the four games. The Bison return to league play Saturday, Oct. 2, at George Washington and Johns Hopkins. They will battle the Colonials at 12 p.m. before squaring off with the Blue Jays at 5 p.m. Bucknell swept a doubleheader of with those two teams a couple of weeks ago at Kinney Natatorium.
