Bucknell Men's Water Polo Wraps Up League Schedule on Road this Weekend
Oct. 15, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. – After playing 10 games in 17 days, the Bucknell men’s water polo team is in a slower stretch where it will play only four times in a 25-day span to wrap up the regular season. The Bison begin that stretch this weekend with their final two road contests of 2009. Bucknell will face league foes Johns Hopkins (Friday) and No. 13 Navy (Saturday) over the next two days. Weekend Schedule Bucknell Men’s Water Polo Notebook (12-9, 5-1 CWPA) • Bucknell is ranked No. 18 in the latest national poll. It is the third straight week the Bison have been ranked. Overall, Bucknell has been ranked five weeks this year, climbing as high as No. 17. • With No. 13 Navy on its schedule for Saturday, Bucknell will have faced 13 ranked opponents by the conclusion of the weekend. The Bison enter the weekend with a 3-9 mark opposite ranked foes. All three wins have been at Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell has played four top-five teams this year. • Bucknell has lost three of its last four games, marking just the second time this year it has done that. The Bison have lost two in a row just once. • Bucknell is 42-1 in its last 10 games it has netted at least 10 goals. The lone loss in that stretch came Sept. 19 against Johns Hopkins (L, 11-10). • Bucknell is in a stretch where it is playing eight consecutive games away from Kinney Natatorium. However, this weekend’s contests are just the third and fourth true road games the Bison will play. They have played 15 neutral-site contests.
• With 12 wins this year, Bucknell has accumulated double-figure victories for the 13th consecutive season. The Bison are aiming for their fourth straight above-.500 mark. • In his second year as Bison head coach, John Abdou has registered a record of 29-25. Seven of the eight coaches in Bucknell history have career records of at least .500. Overall, Bucknell is 552-391-4 all-time. • After registering 47 saves in his first 11 games, senior goalie Nick Donahue has accumulated 89 stops in the last 10 contests. He has five double-figure save outings this year, all in the last 10 games. Donahue’s 17 saves last Thursday against league foe George Washington marked the most by a Bison since 2004. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native enters the weekend with 396 career saves. • Howie Kalter tallied at least one goal in 30 consecutive games before being held scoreless against No. 3 USC last weekend. The junior has started a new streak, though, and has tallied one goal in three straight games, and 33 of his last 34. Kalter leads the team in goals with 37, five shy of his career high. • Paul Reamey had a career day this past Sunday. The junior tallied five goals and five assists in two games, including three goals and three assists vs. Redlands. The six points equaled a season-high figure for a Bison this year, and was a career high for the Palo Alto, Calif., native. Reamey now ranks fourth on Bucknell with a career-high 29 points. • Kalter, Sean Coghlan and Andrew Nelson are the only three Bison to start all 21 games this year. • Freshman Brian Barron has won 27 of 47 sprints this year. The 27 sprints won ranks eighth in program history and are the most for a Bison freshman since the stat began being tracked in 2001. • Junior Sean Coghlan enters the weekend with 98 career points (53g, 45a). He is trying to become the fifth current Bison to accumulate at least 100 career points, joining Richie Hyden (271), Kalter (133), Randy Ang (118) and Johnny Stupp (114). • Even though Bucknell is three games above .500, it has been outscored by 12 goals this year (219-207). The Bison have not been outscored over an entire season since 2003. • Interestingly, Bucknell is scoring at the exact same rate it was last year. In 2008, the Bison connected on 37.7 percent (317-for-840) of their shots. This year, they are scoring on 37.7 percent (207-for-549) as well.
