Bucknell Men's Water Polo to Host Southern Championships This Weekend
Oct. 29, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kinney Natatorium will serve as the host site for this weekend's Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Championships. The three-day, 11-team event will take place Nov. 2-4. A total of 20 games will be played in a span of less than 48 hours.
The Southern Championships divides the 11 teams into four "divisions" and each team will play a round-robin schedule within its division. The remainder of the weekend schedule is then a bracketed tournament based on the round-robin results. The top four teams will advance to the Eastern Championship, which will be contested Nov. 16-18 at Princeton and determine the CWPA's NCAA automatic berth.
Bucknell (11-13, 3-5 CWPA) is the No. 4 seed in the field and will open its tournament schedule Friday at 7 p.m. against fifth-seeded George Washington. The Bison will then play ninth-seeded Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Bucknell's remaining games during the weekend will be based on its first two results.
The nationally ranked (t-16th) Bison finished third at last year's Southern Championships and have finished in the top four 12 consecutive years.
The top five seeds are all from Bucknell's division, the CWPA Southern Division, East Region. The bottom six seeds are from the CWPA Southern Division, West Region. Navy garnered the top overall seed.
A total of three teams (No. 14 Navy, No. 16 Bucknell, No. 18 Princeton) in the field appear in the latest national rankings.
