Award Winners Announced at Men's Water Polo Season-Ending Banquet
Dec. 9, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team announced several award winners for the 2004 campaign at its season-ending banquet last week. Junior Bradley Roslyn took home the team's Offensive Most Valuable Player Award, classmate Trevor Mullins was tabbed the Defensive MVP, while seniors Elliot Benoist and Jay Danforth shared the Scott Schulte Award. Additionally, freshman Josh Sunday was given the Coaches Award, while Jason Rechel was named the team's Rookie of the Year. In addition to the announcement of the award winners, head coach John Zeigler named Trevor Mullins, Bradley Roslyn and Aaron Platshon tri-captains for the 2005 season. Platshon will become just the second three-time captain in program history. Listed as a senior this year, Platshon, who did not play in 2002, will utilize his final year of eligibility next fall. Roslyn picked up his second straight Offensive MVP award after leading the team with 50 goals. He added 18 assists for a team-high 68 points. A member of the All-East and All-League Southern Division first teams, Roslyn also led the team by drawing 41 ejections and firing 150 shots. On two separate occasions this season Roslyn tallied five goals in a game, including against Salem International in the Eastern Championship fifth-place game, which the Bison won 9-8. Roslyn has 138 career goals and 199 career points. Mullins was awarded the Defensive MVP for his play in goal this season. A starter in all 31 games, Mullins made a career-high 251 saves and allowed just 241 goals for a .510 save percentage. Mullins fell just two saves shy of appearing on Bucknell's single-season top-10 list for saves. The Orinda, Calif., native made a career-high 17 saves during a 12-8 victory over Johns Hopkins at the Southern Championships. Benoist and Danforth shared the Scott Schulte Award, given to "the individuals who contribute the most to Bucknell water polo". Typically given to seniors, Platshon earned the award as a junior last year. Benoist had an outstanding final season in orange and blue, finishing third on the team with 37 goals. He also had 29 assists for a total of 66 points to rank second on the squad. The St. Louis, Mo., native wrapped up his career with 134 goals and 250 points. Danforth excelled in his final season at Bucknell, as well. He led the Bison with 49 steals and scored a career high-tying 47 goals. Danforth also drew 22 ejections and won 44 of 96 sprints. For his career, Danforth netted 140 goals and had 253 steals. Sunday and Rechel represented the freshman class in the awards. Sunday earned the Coaches Award after playing in all 31 games and scoring 16 goals. The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native drew 10 starts during his freshman campaign and recorded 10 steals. Rechel started nine games and played in 30 of Bucknell's 31 as a rookie and was named Rookie of the Year for his performance. The top scorer among freshmen, Rechel registered 16 goals and 15 assists.
Bucknell finished the 2004 season with a 17-14 record, its most wins since a 21-21 mark in 2000. The last time the Bison finished above .500 was 1999. Bucknell claimed fifth place at the season-ending Eastern Championships, after finishing fourth at the Southern Division Championships.
