Lear, Miller Open NCAA Competition for Bucknell Wrestling
March 15, 2012
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior 165-pounder Corey Lear (Orangeville, Pa./Benton Area) pinned Michigan State's David Chezza in just 1 minute, 2 seconds, to earn the only win on the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships for Bucknell. Lear was one of two Bison in action Thursday at the Scottrade Center as 125-pounder Austin Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Hempfield) also wrestled. Lear and Miller were both making their first NCAA appearances. Lear finished the day 1-1 with both bouts ending in pins. He will now face Oklahoma State's Dallas Bailey Friday as he tries to continue through the consolation bracket. Miller was 0-2 on Thursday and has been eliminated from the bracket. Both Bucknell grapplers had tough first-round opponents as Lear was pinned by top-seeded David Taylor of Penn State before coming back to defeat Chezza with his career high-tying fifth pin of the campaign. Miller was pinned by second-seeded Zachary Sanders of Minnesota in the first round and then lost a tight 13-10 decision to Appalachian State's Antonio Gravely in the consolation bracket. Lear has already faced his Friday opponent, Bailey, this year. He lost by a 9-7 score in a late-January dual in Stillwater, Okla. Lear, who finished fifth at the EIWA Championships and earned an at-large berth to NCAAs, is now 17-10 on the season. Miller completed his rookie campaign with a 22-14 mark. He had won six of his last seven bouts entering the NCAA Championships. He was coming off a third-place finish at the EIWA Championships, which earned him an automatic berth into the NCAA bracket.
Lear will continue competition at the NCAA Championships Friday morning. The three-day event runs through Saturday.
