Bucknell Wrestling Posts 2-1 Record at Hoosier Duals
Dec. 1, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Austin Miller, Corey Lear and Stephen McPeek each picked up three victories to lead the Bucknell wrestling team to a 2-1 record at Saturday's Hoosier Duals. The Bison opened the day with a 27-15 victory over Gardner-Webb, then lost a close 18-15 decision to host Indiana and concluded the competition with a 25-15 win over Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
Miller, a 125-pounder who was seeing his first action of the season after a preseason injury, got the day started right with a pin of Gardner-Webb's Tyler Ziegler in the first bout of the morning. He followed that with a decision against Indiana's Joe Duca and then earned a forfeit to finish 3-0 and up his career record to 25-14.
Lear also collected one of Bucknell's (2-1) four pins opposite the Bulldogs at 165 pounds. He then registered a 5-3 decision over No. 16 Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana, who was 12-3 on the season entering the day. It was Lear's third career victory over a ranked opponent. Lear then wrapped up the day with a 2-0 decision to improve to 14-3 on the season. He has now won nine bouts in a row and 11 of his last 12.
McPeek had a pair of bonus-point wins and a tight decision to get to his 3-0 mark on the day. Like Miller and Lear, he earned a pin opposite Gardner-Webb. He then defeated Indiana's Cheney Dale 1-0 and concluded the day with a 13-2 major decision over Deshoun White of SIUE. McPeek is now 6-1 in his last seven bouts and has eight career pins.
Bonus points really helped the Bison in their two wins and hurt them in the loss to the Hoosiers. In the opening match, Bucknell and Gardner-Webb each won five bouts, but the Bison had four pins (Miller, Lear, McPeek, Tyler Lyster) as they won by the 12-point margin.
Bucknell won six bouts against SIUE, including two forfeits (Miller, Joe Stolfi) and one major decision (McPeek). Three of SIUE's wins came by decision. In fact, opponents captured 14 bouts against the Bison and 11 were by decision.
Both Bucknell and Indiana won five bouts in the middle match of the day, but the Hoosiers posted one victory by major decision and one by tech fall to give them the final three-point margin.
Both the Indiana and SIUE matches were not decided until the 285-pound bout. The Bison led the Hoosiers 15-14 entering the 285-pound bout, while Bucknell was up 19-15 on SIUE entering the forfeited 285-pound bout.
Nine of Bucknell's 11 wrestlers that competed on Saturday earned at least one individual victory. Tyler Lyster posted two wins as he, Miller, Lear and McPeek combined for 11 of the Bison's 16 wins.
Bucknell will next be in action Dec. 16 at Madison Square Garden when it faces 23-time national champion Iowa in the Grapple at the Garden. Start time for the match is 12:30 p.m.
