Jim Gibson Named Assistant Wrestling Coach at Bucknell
July 25, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell head wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger on Wednesday announced that 2007 NCAA qualifier Jim Gibson has joined the Bison staff. A four-year starter at Edinboro and a 2009 World Team Trials qualifier, Gibson has coached at Clarion since 2007.
"We're excited to add Jim Gibson to our coaching staff," said Wirnsberger, who is entering his seventh season on the Bison bench in 2012-13. "He is a young man that has tremendous passion and love for the sport of wrestling. Jim's past experience as a coach will help him hit the ground running with our Bison student-athletes. He has been mentored by some of the best coaches in our business and there is no doubt it will be a seamless transition for our program.
"Jim will have a significant impact with the development of our upper weights. This is a coaching area that needed to be addressed and he will fill that void. His maturity and experience will serve him well as a coach and he will be great both in the practice room and in the corner."
A 2007 graduate of Edinboro with a degree in health and physical education, Gibson was part of two teams that finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. He captured a 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title, earned a silver medal in 2005, and finished in the top five in the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) twice, including a runner-up showing as a senior.
Following his collegiate career, Gibson spent time wrestling at the senior and international levels. In addition to qualifying for the World Team Trials in 2009, he was champion of the 2009 Northeast Regional Qualifier and a fourth-place finisher at the same event in 2008. Gibson also finished in the top eight at the 2008 U.S. National Championships Challenge Tournament, qualifying for the 16-man U.S. National Championships.
The lone member of his high school's wrestling team, Gibson was runner-up at the Pennsylvania State Championships as a senior after an eighth-place showing as a junior.
Gibson began his tenure at Clarion as a graduate assistant coach and has also served as a volunteer assistant for the Division I program that has produced two All-Americans, 11 NCAA qualifiers, six PSAC champions, three EWL gold medal winners and four Academic All-Americans since he arrived in July 2007. The Golden Eagles placed 18th at this past March's NCAA Championship.
"I'd like to thank Dan Wirnsberger for the tremendous opportunity to coach at Bucknell," said Gibson. "I am thrilled about becoming a Bison. Bucknell is a great place and I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes and outstanding coaching staff that is already in place."
Gibson earned his master's in education from Clarion in 2009 and has been an adult probation and parole officer since 2010. He married his wife, Sarah, in May 2009.
