Bucknell Cross Country Prepares for Major Meet
Nov. 11, 2005 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's men's and women's cross country teams are set to race at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, which are scheduled for Saturday, November 12, with the men running a 10-kilometer race at 11:00 a.m. and the women, a 6K at 12:15pm, in Bethlehem, Pa. The race will be held on the same course the women won the Patriot League Championships on just two weeks ago. A good individual showing at this meet could advance some Bison runners to the NCAA Championships. The women's strength starts with junior Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), who has been Bucknell's lead runner for most of the season. Stevens finished first for the Bison at the PL Championships and fourth overall, with a time of 21 minutes, 14 seconds. Second for Bucknell is junior Leanna Nastase (eaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills), who has been the number two runner on the squad for the majority of the season, including a sixth-place overall finish at the Championships (21:37). Next in the line-up are sophomore Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) and junior Lauren Bricker (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), who finished third and fourth for the Bison at the PL's and ninth and 11th overall (21:47, 21:51), respectively. Rounding out the top-five for the Orange and Blue should be senior Kayla Halloran (Norwell, Mass./Norwell), who was the final scorer for Bucknell at the PL's, with a time of 21:54, good enough for 12th place overall. On the men's side, sophomore Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) has been strong for the Bison throughout the season, while junior Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) has also been a solid performer. Campbell finished first for the Orange and Blue and 18th overall at the Championships (25:12), while Forys finished second on the team and 24th overall (25:30). Junior Derrin Pierret (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and senior Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) should compete for Bucknell's numbers three and four positions, as Pierret finished 34th overall (25:51) and Fortkiewicz finished on Pierret's heels in the 35th spot (25:53) at the PL race. Sophomore Michael Gibney (Wading River, N.U./Shoreham Wading River) has also been a significant runner this season, as he finished the Championships as the Bison's final scorer in 36th place overall (26:02).
If Bucknell turns in a strong performance, some individuals could qualify to race at the National Championships, scheduled for Monday, November 21. In the mean time, the Bison will return to competition on Saturday, November 19, at the IC4A Championships.
