Bucknell Women's Basketball Downs American 66-43
Jan. 10, 2006 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down four rebounds, while Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) added 12 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the season as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated American 66-43 Tuesday evening at Bender Arena. The Bison improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2001-02. It was the fifth consecutive road victory for Bucknell, which established a new program record. The Eagles dropped to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League. Schober, who was making her second career start, netted double figures for the third straight game as she and Foster combined to take 35 of Bucknell's 67 field goal attempts. Schober was 7 of 18 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, while Foster made 6 of 17 from the field. After playing to an even 16-16 score over the first 14 minutes of the fast-paced first half, Bucknell outscored American 15-5 over the final six minutes of the half. The Bison scored seven straight points, ignited by a 3-pointer from the left corner by Schober. The Eagles answered with five consecutive points, but Bucknell tallied the final eight points of the half over the final three minutes, including a 3-pointer by Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) from the right corner as time expired to take a 31-21 lead into halftime. That 8-0 run extended into the second half when the Bison scored the first five points to take a 36-21 lead as American went more than six minutes total without scoring. The Bucknell defense, which forced 19 turnovers, was the key later in the second half as well. The Bison limited the Eagles to one field goal and four points over the final eight minutes of the game until Pam Stanfield knocked down a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining. During that time the Bucknell lead ballooned from 46-36 to as many as 26 points at 66-40 following a pair of free throws by Sarah Latham (Mystic, Conn./Fitch), who extended her consecutive free throw streak to 11.
Hollobaugh was the third Bucknell player in double figures, scoring 10. It was her first time reaching double figures since returning from her knee injury four games ago. She also added eight rebounds and three assists. Bucknell shot 35.8 percent from the field, but held American to just 28.8 percent. It was the second consecutive opponent the Bison held under 30.0 percent. The Bison grabbed 51 rebounds to outrebound the Eagles 51-39 saw their guards hit the boards hard. In addition to Hollobaugh's eight caroms, Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) hauled in eight and Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) grabbed seven. Sahar Nusseibeh led American with 12 points, while Tish Curry pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. The 43 points Bucknell yielded was the lowest total for an opponent since American tallied 39 in a 51-39 loss two years ago. Bucknell returns home Saturday, Jan. 14, to play Holy Cross at Sojka Pavilion. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Bison have won three of the last four games against the Crusaders. |
