EASTON, Pa. - Kristin Doherty and Lindsay Myers each missed last-second 3-pointers for Lafayette and Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) made 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds remaining as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Lafayette 54-51 Tuesday night at the Kirby Sports Center.

The Bison, who improved to 16-8 overall and 9-2 in the Patriot League, kept pace with Army, which defeated American 73-49 Tuesday night, for first place in the league standings. The Leopards fell to 7-17 overall and 2-9 in league play as they lost their third straight game.

Bucknell led most of the game until Lafayette took its first lead at 46-45 with just over five minutes to play on a driving layup by Myers. The Bison held a 50-49 lead entering the final minute of the game. Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar), who was just 4-for-8 from the free throw line in the game, made two free throws to give the Bison a 52-49 advantage. Myers, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half, quickly cut the lead back to one with another layup.

Bucknell took possession with just over 45 seconds to play. Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) missed a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down, but Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) soared for the offensive rebound and was immediately fouled. She made 1 of 2 free throws for a 53-51 lead with 20 seconds left.

Doherty, who had already made four 3-pointers in the game, nearly gave Lafayette the win with a 3-pointer from the right wing, but it came up short. Seawright grabbed the rebound and made one free throw with two seconds showing on the clock. Myers' last-second desperation heave from midcourt caromed off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Bucknell jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the first half as Lafayette missed its first five shots and did not score until a layup by Val Gomez with 13:15 left. Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican), who led the Bison with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double, made a pair of 3-pointers during the game-opening run.

The Bison led by as many as 10 points twice in the first half, but Lafayette was able to narrow the gap down to one on two occasions, including 19-18 after a basket by Jessica Spicer with 5:40 to play. Bucknell then scored seven straight points and held the Leopards without a field goal for more than five minutes. However, Lafayette's Vanessa Van De Venter scored on a short jumper and Doherty connected from the top of the key for her third 3-pointer of the half to make the halftime score 28-23.

Foster was not the only Bucknell player to struggle from the free throw line as the Bison made just 11 of 21 overall. Lafayette converted just 8 of 16, including 1 of 5 shooting by Myers.

The Bison shot just 35 percent from the floor, but forced 17 turnovers and outrebounded the Leopards 46-30, including 17-5 on the offensive end. Foster pulled down eight boards, while Hollobaugh registered seven to go along with eight points and a team-high four assists.

Bucknell, which has won eight of its last nine games, improved to 9-2 in the Patriot League for just the fourth time in program history and swept the season series from Lafayette for the fifth time in the last six years.

The Bison are back in action Saturday when they travel to West Point to face Army at 1 p.m. The winner of the game will take over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings.
