ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, December 2, in the finals of the Cornell Classic. The Orange and Blue fell in a heartbreaker, dropping a 75-74 decision to the host team. The Bison are now 5-1 on the season.

For the first time this season, the Bison failed to carry a lead into halftime, trailing 30-28 at the break. In a sloppy first half that saw both teams commit 15 turnovers, Bucknell could not seem to get its offense clicking. Sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) got Bucknell on the board with a three-pointer nearly four minutes into the game, and went on to score nine of BU's first 11 points. Cornell could not capitalize on Bucknell's poor shooting (the Bison shot only 34.4% in the first half), despite hitting 48.1% of its own shots, and carried just the two-point lead into locker rooms. Franks was a big part of the Orange and Blue offense, scoring a season-high 11 points in the frame.

Cornell extended its lead to five just five seconds into the second with a made three-pointer, but the Bison chipped away at the lead and tied the game 35-35 just two minutes later. The Big Red used a 7-0 run to jump ahead 42-35, and the hot team would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Cornell built its advantage to as many as 10 in the half, but each time Bucknell battled back.

The Bison did not go down easily. With the Cornell lead at seven (72-65) with 22 seconds left, sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) drilled a three to cut the lead to four. After a made free throw by the Big Red, freshman Heidi Helsing (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) did just what she was put in to do and nailed a three-pointer with 12 ticks left on the clock to cut the Cornell lead to 73-71. The Bison were forced to foul and Cornell's Breean Walas calmly hit both free throws with seven seconds left to push Cornell's lead back to four at 75-71.

With time winding down, Creamer hit her fourth trey of the night with one second left in the game to create the final margin, 75-74.

Creamer, who was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row, led all scorers with a season-high 25 points. Franks finished the game with a season-high 16 points, while junior Vicki Quimby (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) and freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) were both in double-figures with 12. Almind was also named to the All-Tournament team after tossing in a game-high 19 points in Bucknell's 75-52 victory over Niagara on Friday. In addition to her 12 points, Quimby pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Also scoring were junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) with four points and a career-high nine caroms, Helsing with three points and junior Rebekah May (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) with two points.

Bucknell will travel to St. Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday, December 6, to take on the Red Flash at 7:00 p.m.
