Bucknell Women's Basketball Runs Past High Point, 71-60
Dec. 3, 2005
USAFA, Colo. - Sophomore Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) had a career performance with 24 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks, helping the Bucknell women's basketball squad to a 71-60 victory over High Point in the Air Force Classic consolation game at Clune Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bison picked up their first road win of the season and snapped a two-game slide to improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Panthers suffered their second straight loss to drop to 3-3 overall. Foster led Bucknell in points, rebounds and blocks. Her seven blocks matched a program single game record originally set by Stacey Spitko on Feb. 8, 1986, against Delaware. Foster also set new career highs in points and rebounds, shot 8-15 from the field and was 8-10 at the free throw line. Newcomers Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner), Corrine Keller (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton (South Plains College)) all reached new career highs in points as well. Brown totaled 13 points and five assists while Seawright tallied nine points, both coming off the bench for the Bison. Keller had 12 points, six rebounds and two steals in her first collegiate start.
In the opening seven minutes, the score remained close as neither team could pull away by more than four points. Then, at 13:05, sophomore Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) netted a free throw to begin a 27-8 Bucknell run that closed out the period and gave the Bison a 40-24 advantage at halftime. Bucknell's defense held High Point to just three field goals in the final 13 minutes of the first half.
Champion stretched the Bison lead to 20 to start the second half, recording four of her seven points with two field goals. However, the Panthers were able to chip away at the deficit and came within two with a layup by Raven Truslow with four minutes remaining in regulation. That would be as close as High Point would come as Bucknell responded by outscoring the Panthers 15-6 in the final four minutes. Foster netted nine of her 13 second half points during that stretch, including a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line. Candyce Sellars led all High Point scorers with 16 points and three steals while Caitlyn Thys recorded a double-double for the Panthers with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Bucknell shot 40.3 percent for the game (27-67) while High Point finished shooting 31.9 percent (23-72). The Bison will break for the final exam period before returning to action on Dec., 17, when the team will travel to Princess Anne, Md., to face Maryland-Eastern Shore in a 6 p.m. contest. |
