Bucknell's Lindsey Hollobaugh Named Patriot League Freshman of the Year
March 3, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's basketball freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) has picked up yet another honor this season, earning the 2004 Patriot League Freshman of the Year award and landing herself on the all-rookie team. In addition, senior Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) was named to the all-conference first-team for the first time in her career. The all-league teams and major individual award winners were announced on Wednesday, March 3, on a teleconference held by the Patriot League in conjunction with the 2003-04 women's basketball tournament in Upper Marlboro, Md., March 5-7. Hollobaugh is nearing the end of an outstanding rookie campaign which saw her finish the regular-season as the Patriot League's top freshman scorer, and sixth overall, at 16.2 points per game. The league-record eight-time Freshman of the Week has registered two double-doubles in her first season, and has reached 20 or more points in the scoring column seven different times. The 5-9 guard opened her career as just the third Bucknell player to reach 20 points in her collegiate debut, going 7-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the field. A sign of things to come, Hollobaugh has led the team in three-point shooting the entire season, connecting on 33 triples, the most-ever by a freshman in school history. Her 438 season points are the second-most by a first-year player at BU, behind only three-time Patriot League Player of the Year Molly Creamer's 475 in 1999-2000. Hollobaugh is peaking at just the right time. In the last four games of the regular-season, she averaged 26.0 points per game, including two career-high performances with 28 points, connected on 57.4% (39-68) of her shots from the field, and missed just four free throws in 25 attempts for a .840 average. Hollobaugh becomes Bucknell's fourth Patriot League Freshman of the Year, and the third in the last six years.
Almind makes her first appearance on the All-Patriot League First-Team after earning a spot on the second team as both a freshman and a junior. The co-captain saved her best for last, averaging career-highs of 17.3 ppg and 13.1 rpg. The nation's leader in rebounding, Almind has set the Bucknell and Patriot League single-season marks with 354 caroms this year. The 6-0 guard/forward is on pace to also set the conference single-season rebounding average record, currently held by Holy Cross Amy O'Brien (11.5, 1997-98). She has recorded a school-record 17 double-doubles this season, including her first-ever 20-20 game (29 points, 20 rebounds vs. Iona on 1/6/04). In addition to her prowess on the glass, Almind has discovered a knack for rejecting shots this year, turning away a school single-season record 57. She entered this season with a total of 46 blocks in three years, and has now moved into a tie for second place on the Bison career list with 103. At 14-13 overall and 7-7 in the Patriot League, the Orange and Blue enter the tournament as the fifth seed. Bucknell will face fourth-seeded and defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross in its first-round game at the tournament on Friday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that game will then face the winner of the #1 Colgate/#8 Lafayette game in a semifinal match-up on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The 2003-04 All-Patriot League Teams follow:
Player-of-the-Year: Katie Macfarlane, Army, Sr., Forward
