Women's Hoops' Dunn Claims First Bison Athlete of the Week
Nov. 26, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's basketball collected its first award of the season as Alyssa Dunn (Mason, Ohio/Seven Hills School) was named the Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. The senior averaged 19.0 points and 4.5 assists last week as Bucknell worked its way to a three-game winning streak and improved its record to 3-2 on the year. Dunn, who is now averaging 15.6 points on the season to lead the team, recorded her second consecutive 20-point game against Niagara last Wednesday. She tallied a career-high 23 points in the contest against the Purple Eagles while going 6 of 12 (.500) from the field and shooting 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Behind the 3-point line, Dunn shot 3-for-3 to claim the first game of her career where she hit more than two 3-pointers. Dunn's scoring total against Niagara was one better than her previous personal best (22) that she set in Bucknell's win at Canisius just four days earlier. Dunn's offensive production continued through the victory at Morgan State on Sunday when she posted a team-best 15 points. The guard was 3-for-7 (.429) from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw, which also became a new career high at the charity stripe. All but three of Dunn's points, and eight of her free throws, came in the second half as she spurred the Bison to a comeback eight-point win. More than just a scorer, Dunn recorded a career best with six assists against Niagara. She then added three more at Morgan State to lead the team in assists in both contests. Dunn also averaged 3.5 rebounds over the two games.
Through both games, Dunn shot 9-for-19 (.474) from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point distance, and 17-for-17 from the free throw line. Coming out of the weekend, Dunn ranks third in the Patriot League in scoring (15.6) for the season. She is also first in free throw percentage (.929) as well as sixth in field goal percentage (.490), assists (3.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1).
The Bison Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Dunn's career and the first for the women's basketball squad since Lindsay Horbatuck (Avon, Conn./Avon) claimed the award twice last season. Fellow senior Rachel Voss (Cincinnati, Ohio/Loveland) was also an honoree a year ago. Bucknell enters the final week of November with a 3-2 record putting it over .500 after more than one game for the first time since 2008-09. During their current three-game winning streak, the Bison have defeated Canisius (59-50), Niagara (77-69) and Morgan State (72-64). They will attempt to extend their streak to four games on Wednesday when they host Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion. The contest has been designated Take A Kid to the Game Night. Fans who purchase one adult ticket will receive one free children's ticket. |
