Bucknell Novice Eight Defeats Fairfield and Drexel in Women's Rowing

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's rowing squad raced Fairfield and Drexel Saturday afternoon and the Bison first novice eight boat won its race by nearly 26 seconds over second-place Fairfield. The varsity eight took second in its race.

The novice eight, which was comprised of coxswain-Hope Heffner, 8-Ariel Farrar-Wellman, 7-Amanda Wellman, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Jennie Trayes, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Jenna Kotyk, 2-Jessica Glenn and 1-Sophie Bird, finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:20.5. The Stags were the next boat to cross the line, finishing in 7:46.1. Drexel took third in 7:58.7, while Bucknell's second novice eight of coxswain-Antoinette Klatzky, 8-Katie Abbott, 7-Amy Van Nostrand, 6-Colleen McKeown, 5-Kelly Walker, 4-Gillian Young, 3-Kimin Fox, 2-Lauren Bolcar and 1-Jayne Kubat finished in 8:09.8.

"The second novice eight gave a good push, but will need to be more focused next week," commented Bucknell assistant coach Vi Ngo.

"We upped our intensity at practice and it paid off today," said Bucknell head novice coach Katie Davis. "The novice eight ran a clean, focused race."

Despite finishing second, the Bison varsity eight was just four seconds off the pace set by Drexel's "A" boat. Bucknell finished in 6:56.7, while the Dragons won in a time of 6:52.6. Drexel's "B" boat (7:16.1) and Fairfield (7:28.5) rounded out the four-team field. The Bison varsity eight rowers were coxswain-Coral Swartz, 8-Danielle Monteverde, 7-Jessica Noonan, 6-Alexis Will, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Lauren Ewald, 3-Kara Schroepfer, 2-Lauren Olsen and 1-Erin Henry.

"I was very pleased with the results of all the crews," said Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "It was a benefit for us to have a good race since we have a big week ahead as we prepare for next week's Patriot League Championships."
 

 

Bucknell returns to the water next Sunday, April 24, for the first-ever Patriot League Rowing Championships at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
