Bucknell Women's Crew Athlete Named to Academic All-District Team
June 19, 2004 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Jill Harrington (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) has been named to the 2004 Academic All-District II University Division Women's At-Large Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Harrington's appearance on the team is the first of her career. With her selection to the squad, Harrington is now eligible for national Academic All-America recognition. The national team will be voted on later this month and announced on Thursday, June 17. In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserve on his/her team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Harrington has been an instrumental member of the 2004 Bison crew, sitting in the stroke seat of the lightweight eight for the entire season. With Harrington in the boat, the varsity crew has captured gold in four races this spring, and in early May turned in a silver medal performance at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, the largest intercollegiate regatta in the United States. Harrington's silver medal was the second of her career captured at the Dad Vail, as she was a member of the openweight four that came in second in 2002.
The highlight of her Dad Vail experience, however, came in 2003 when Harrington was the stroke on the varsity eight which received Bucknell's first-ever eight-oared gold at the Dad Vail, catapulting the Bison squad to a second-place overall finish out of 111 institutions from the United States and Canada. Her lightweight eight crew finished that season with a national ranking of fourth. A three-time most valuable rower on her team, Harrington has also achieved great success in the classroom. She has been a member of the Dean's List every semester of her four-year career, and has posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average both semester's this year. The membership chair of the Martar Board National Honors Society, Harrington was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. Despite graduating with a 3.91 in biology on May 23, Harrington's career is not quite over. She will be competing at the Henley Regatta on the Thames River in England on June 18-20.
