Sept. 8, 2001
NEW YORK, N.Y. -Senior Melissa Maher scored two goals, including the game-tying score with 4:50 left in regulation, but it wasn't enough for the Bison as they fell to Columbia, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, September 8, 2001. The loss drops Bucknell to 2-2 on the season. The contest was Columbia's season opener. The Lions' Katie Rose Thornton scored an overtime goal off of a feed from senior captain Nikki Campbell to give Columbia the win, extending the Lions' win streak over Bucknell to two. The Bison went into halftime facing a 2-1 deficit after a goal by senior captain Annie Hunsicker at the 5:53 mark. Teammate and fellow captain Lauren Campbell was credited with the assist. Columbia struck first with a score at the 15:24 mark of the first half when junior Becky Schatzkin scored an unassisted goal. Exactly seven minutes later, the Lions built the lead to 2-0 when Nikki Campbell took a pass from senior captain Tina Fernandez, before Hunsicker struck for BU to avoid the shutout. Bucknell tied it at two early in the second on a shot by Maher with an assist from Lisa Bingaman less than three minutes into the second stanza. Schatzkin put the Light Blue back up 3-2 with her second goal of the game at 20:13. Maher and Bingaman connected again for the game-tying goal with 4:50 left in regulation, and the teams headed to overtime. With the score tied at three, Thornton scored the game winner at 6:14 in the first overtime session.
Bison goalkeeper senior Mel Rhoads, who was thrust into the starting position with just four minutes left in warm-ups due to an injury to regular starter Sonja Wettergreen, made four saves in the contest.
