Hunsicker Lifts BU Field Hockey to Sudden-Death Win at Monmouth
Sept. 9, 2001
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Annie Hunsicker's goal with 8:04 remaining in sudden-death overtime lifted the Bucknell field hockey squad to a 4-3 victory over Monmouth in a non-league contest Sunday afternoon. The Bison's victory came just 24 hours after a 4-3 overtime loss at Columbia, and it upped their season record to 3-2. With the game knotted at 2-2, Bucknell surged ahead on Lisa Bingaman's unassisted goal with 20:40 remaining in regulation. But the persistent Hawks, who had earlier erased a 2-0 halftime deficit, evened things again with 10:38 to play on Gina Chico's second goal of the night, the latter coming on a penalty stroke. Just under seven minutes into the 15-minute overtime session, Hunsicker took a pass from Amy Marvel and buried her second goal of the year. Bison forward Dena Ebert registered a pair of goals just 1:56 apart early in the opening period, staking the visitors to a 2-0 edge. Chico and Kellie Nurko answered with unassisted tallies in the opening 12 minutes of the second half, setting the stage for the see-saw conclusion. Senior goalkeeper Mel Rhoads stopped six shots to register her first victory of the 2001 campaign. Defender Monica McCorry saved a score by clearing a Hawks shot off the goal line, her third defensive save of the road trip. Bucknell outshot Monmouth 18-10. The Bison return to action next Saturday, Sept. 15, with a 12 p.m. home contest against Holy Cross. It will be Bucknell's initial Patriot League match of the season.
