Bucknell Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Overtime Decision to Lafayette in Patriot League Opener
Sept. 22, 2001
LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the fourth time in as many games, the Bucknell field hockey team went into overtime, dropping a 3-2 decision to Lafayette in BU's Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bison, who are 2-2 in overtime contests this season, drop to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action. Lafayette junior Megan Monahan, who left the game with an injury with 8:01 left in the first half and didn't return until 31:45 of the second, tallied her second goal of the contest 6:20 into overtime off of a pass from sophomore Jennifer Stone to lift the Leopards over Bucknell with the one goal victory. The past five times these two teams have faced each other, the game has been decided by one goal, and three of those contests have gone to overtime. The Leopards wasted little time getting on the board when junior Beth Gulotta scored on her own rebound with just 3:28 off the clock in the first half. Less than six minutes later, Monahan notched her first goal of the game, giving Lafayette a 2-0 cushion, off a defensive corner at the 25:04 mark. Sophomore Meredith Hahn was credited with the assist on the play. BU responded just 1:30 later when senior Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) knocked in senior tri-captain Annie Hunsicker's (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) initial shot to cut the lead to 2-1. The two teams played the rest of the half without a score. The Leopards had several opportunities in the closing minutes, but junior goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen, who ended the game with a season-high 10 saves, made many crucial stops to prevent the Bison from entering the half with a larger deficit.
In a second half that featured several momentum shifts, it looked as if Lafayette would come away with the 2-1 victory before freshman Meiko Boynton (Bernardsville, N.J./Pingry) scored on a deflection from senior Erin Plasteras (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) with 1:20 left in regulation to tie the contest at 2-2.
Lafayette goalkeeper, Amy Cohen, finished with five saves on 10 Bucknell shots. The Leopards pounded out 17 shots, while the Bison held a slight edge in penalty corners, 8-7. The Orange and Blue are back in action on Wednesday, September 26, hosting Patriot League foe Ursinus for a 4:30 p.m. start.
