Boynton Works OT Magic Again as Bucknell Field Hockey Downs LaSalle, 2-1
Sept. 24, 2002 LEWISBURG, Pa. - After missing most of the second half after taking a ball off the side of the head, Bucknell sophomore Meiko Boynton returned to the field in time to score the game winning goal 6:31 into sudden-death overtime as the Bison turned back visiting LaSalle 2-1 Tuesday at West Field. Bucknell is now 3-5 on the season, with the last two wins coming on overtime goals off the stick of Boynton. The Bison defeated Columbia in OT on Sept. 14. Boynton, who also assisted on Bucknell's opening tally, leads the team with five goals on the season. Freshman Carli Cataldo opened the scoring with her second goal of the season with only 1:43 remaining in the first half. On a scramble in the LaSalle goal mouth, Cataldo snuck a shot just past the pads of LaSalle goalie Colleen Bolger. The Explorers were held without a shot in the first half, but came out strong in the second and potted the equalizer when Katie O'Connell finished a pass from Emilie Stewart 5:16 into the stanza. LaSalle just missed taking the lead with 12 minutes left in regulation, but a shot rang off the left post. Bucknell dominated the overtime session with four shots and five penalty corners. Boynton ended it by bringing the ball to the right of the cage and lofting a shot just across the goal line. The ball was swatted out of mid-air by a defender, but not before it crossed the line. The Bison held a 20-5 edge in shots and had 14 penalty corners, while LaSalle had none. Bolger finished with seven saves, including two in overtime, while Bucknell keeper Sonja Wettergreen made one save.
Bucknell has won six straight over LaSalle, with each of the last three coming in overtime. The Explorers are coached by 1998 Bucknell graduate Sara Catlin, a former Bison captain who played under current head coach Heather Lewis.
