Maher Scores Her First Goal Of Season Against Towson
Sept. 5, 2000 COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY - Towson 2, Bucknell 1 TOWSON, Md. -- Towson University junior Joann Engestrom scored two second half goals as Towson rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit and beat Bucknell by 2-1 in a non-conference game in Minnegan Stadium on Tuesday evening, September 5. Bucknell took an early lead with 32:06 left in the first half. Junior Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) gave the Bison a 1-0 edge when she scored on a 12-yard shot off a pass from classmate Anne Hunsicker (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy). Engestrom scored her first goal of the game with 32:34 left in the game off a pass from junior Megan Edwards. With 11:24 remaining, Engestrom scored the eventual game-winner as she converted off a penalty corner with sophomore Jessie Buchheim and senior Laura Kilmon assisting. It marked the second straight year that Engestrom scored twice in a Tiger win over Bucknell. She had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win in Lewisburg, Pa., last season. "I'm pleased with the way we played," commented Bison head coach Heather Lewis. "We were playing more consistent, which is what we asked of the team. Towson played a very good game tonight." The Tigers outshot the Bison by a 14-4 margin and had eight penalty corners to Bucknell's three. BU sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) made eight saves for the Orange and Blue while Towson goalkeeper Betsy Crossman made two saves.
