Maher Gives BU Field Hockey Win In Overtime At LaSalle
Sept. 20, 2000 COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY - Bucknell 3, LaSalle 2 (OT) LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Bucknell field hockey team defeated visiting LaSalle, 3-2 in overtime, on Wednesday, September 20. The two teams were playing a game that had been postponed from the day before due to inclement weather. Bucknell sophomore Amy Marvel (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) got the scoring started, converting a pass from senior tri-captain Maura Higgs (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) with 19 minutes remaining in the first half. The Orange and Blue took a 13-3 advantage in shots and a 1-0 lead into the second stanza. Just over four minutes into the final frame of regulation, Maher scored her first goal on a scramble in front of the cage to give BU a 2-0 lead in the contest. LaSalle put the pressure on over the next several minutes and finally got on the board with 17:30 remaining in the half. Senior Jeannie Fitzgerald (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) connected on a pass from junior Jami Wilus (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) to cut the Bucknell lead in half. After dominating the Bison for the next 15 minutes, the Explorers capitalized on a penalty corner when freshman Laura Whitman (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) scored her first collegiate goal off a scramble in front of the cage to knot the game at 2-2 with 2:45 left to play. That score held to the end of regulation and both teams came out aggressive in overtime. After several opportunities, Bucknell junior Dena Ebert (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) found Maher on the left side of the LaSalle cage and Maher drove the ball in for the 3-2 Bucknell win with 9:49 remaining in the extra session. "Obviously, it's nice to win," said BU head coach Heather Lewis. "I think the important thing to take from tonight's game is that we generated a lot of scoring opportunities and when it mattered, we finished them." Bucknell junior goalkeeper Melissa Rhoads (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) got her second start of the 2000 season, recording three saves. LaSalle goalie Julie Hope (Telford, Pa./Souderton) stopped 10 Bison shots. The Orange and Blue improve to 3-4 overall and travel to defending Patriot League champion Lafayette for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, September 23. LaSalle is 1-4 overall.
