Field Hockey Gets Revenge Against Defending PL Champion Lafayette
Sept. 23, 2000 COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY - Bucknell 2, Lafayette 1 EASTON, Pa. -- In a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship game, the Bucknell field hockey team reversed the outcome, defeating Lafayette, 2-1, in conference action on Saturday, September 23. Bucknell, winning its second straight game, improves to 4-4 on the season, 1-1 in league play. The Leopards suffered their third straight loss to fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League. Lafayette dominated the game, but it was the Bison who connected on a first period penalty shot and a late second half goal to take the 2-1 victory. Sophomore Amy Marvel (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) converted a penalty shot with 16:01 left in the first half to give the Orange and Blue the early 1-0 lead. Lafayette tied the game early in the second half off a goal by junior Jill Gulotta. Bucknell junior Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro) then scored her second game-winning goal in as many games for the Bison with 12:25 remaining. Lafayette, which outshot the Bison 32-7, could not take advantage of the 16-1 penalty corner edge it held through the game. Bucknell goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) picked up her third win of the season, stopping 14 Leopard shots. Lafayette keeper Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) had five saves in the contest. The Bison continue Patriot League play at Ursinus on Wednesday, September 27, with a 4:30 p.m. contest.
