Bucknell Field Hockey Suffers Quadruple-Overtime Defeat to La Salle
Oct. 7, 2003
Philadelphia, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking defeat this afternoon in Philadelphia to La Salle, as the Explorers won in the second round of a penalty stroke shootout after regulation ended in a 1-1 tie. The Bison played from behind for most of the match, as La Salle's Sara Camilli opened the scoring 9:42 into the first period off a pass from Amanda Spalding. Bucknell supplied the tying goal with just over 16 minutes to play in regulation, when the Bison's leading goal scorer, Kelly O'Brien put an unassisted goal past La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger. Two fifteen-minute overtime periods were not enough to decide a winner, so the match went into a shootout format. In the second set of penalty strokes, La Salle's Kat Prokop provided the difference-maker. Bucknell out-shot the Explorers, 18-8, making Bolger scurry for 12 saves while Jordan saved four. Bucknell also had 18 penalty corners to La Salle's three. O'Brien's goal was one of a game-high seven shots. The game also served as a chance for a protégé to test her skills against her mentor, as the Explorers are coached by accomplished former Bucknell defender Sarah Catlin '98, one of Bison Head Coach Heather Lewis' former players. The Bison will attempt to reclaim the momentum that led them to the best program start since 1975 on Sunday, on the front half of a Connecticut trip against the Yale Bulldogs. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Bison will face Quinnipiac. Period: 1 2 OT1 OT2 BUCKNELL: 0 1 0 0 -- 1 LA SALLE: 1 0 0 0 -- 2
