Lock Haven Rallies Past Bucknell Field Hockey, 3-1
Oct. 15, 2002 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Nikki Sweger scored two goals and Amy Hale had two assists to lead Lock Haven, the No. 2-ranked team in Division II, to a 3-1 victory over Bucknell Tuesday night at chilly West Field. Bucknell dropped its second straight contest and fell to 5-8, while Lock Haven won its fifth in a row and upped its season mark to 13-2. Trailing 1-0 at the half, Bucknell pressured the Eagles and controlled the tempo for the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Bison capitalized on one of eight second-half penalty corners when Meiko Boynton maneuvered around a defender and drilled home a shot from 12 yards out 12:30 into the half. The goal was her team-leading sixth of the season. Lock Haven answered just under seven minutes later, regaining the lead on Sweger's second goal of the night off a scramble in front of the Bison cage. With 11:30 remaining in the contest, Jen DeNault batted in a shot out of mid-air for a key insurance marker. Both goalies were solid, with Bucknell's Sonja Wettergreen finishing with 10 stops and Lock Haven's Melissa Stubblefield recording five saves. Backing Wettergreen was a defense unit that recorded four saves, including two by Lindsey Gentel and one each from Corin Inderbiztin-Brooks and Kate Ruda. The Eagles held a 19-9 shot advantage and gained 12 penalty corners to Bucknell's 11. The Bison return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Vermont at 1 p.m. LOCK HAVEN 1 2 -- 3 BUCKNELL 0 1 -- 1L - Sweger 5 (Ebaugh), 12:04 B - Boynton 6 (Gentel, Cabral), 47:30 L - Sweger 6 (Hale), 54:21 L - DeNault 8 (Hale), 58:30
