UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team
suffered its second defeat to a nationally ranked team in as many
games, falling to #6 Penn State, 8-1, on Wednesday, October 11.
The host Nittany Lions struck early and often, staking themselves
to a 3-0 lead with under five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Bison avoided the shutout, however, when junior Lauren Campbell
(Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored on a pass from senior Maura
Higgs (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) with ten seconds remaining
in the opening frame to make the score 3-1, Penn State.
PSU put the game away in the second half, scoring five times,
including three goals in a three-minute time span, to take the
lopsided victory.
Bucknell starting goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, Conn./Brien
McMahon) played 55 minutes, recording ten saves. Junior Melissa
Rhoads (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) played 15 minutes, stopping two
Penn State shots.
The Bison fall to 7-7 on the season and take the week off before
hosting Colgate in Patriot League action on Wednesday, October
18. Penn State improves to 11-2.
