Bison Quartet Named to All-PL Field Hockey Team
Nov. 6, 2002 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Less than 48 hours before a showdown with Lafayette in the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament, four Bucknell players received All-Patriot League recognition, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore forward Meiko Boynton (Bernardsville, N.J./Pingry School) and junior defender Kate Ruda (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood H.S.) were named to the All-Patriot League first team, while senior midfielder Amy Marvel (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock H.S.) and junior defender Lindsey Gentel (Sunbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury H.S.) earned second-team citations. All four Bison made the all-league team for the first time. Bucknell's four selections were third-most in the league, behind only regular-season champion Lafayette (6) and runner-up Holy Cross (5). In her first year as a starter, Boynton picked up the bulk of the scoring load after the Bison were hit hard by graduation following the 2001 campaign. Boynton tallied a team-high seven of Bucknell's 25 goals and added four assists for 18 points. She ranks tied for 10th in the Patriot League in points per game at 1.06. Of Boynton's seven goals, two were overtime game-winners. She propelled the Bison to sudden-death victories over Columbia and LaSalle, the latter after she had earlier been knocked out of the game after taking a ball to the head in the second half. Ruda, the Oct. 28 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, elevated her game in 2002 and became one of the league's top defenders. Entering the Patriot League Tournament, she leads the Bison with 105 interceptions and has notched 82 positive tackles and three goal-line saves. Marvel has been a force all season patrolling the midfield for the Bison. The senior tri-captain is tied for second on the team in scoring with 11 points (four goals, three assists), with three of her goals coming in three attempts on penalty strokes. Defensively, Marvel has logged 43 tackles and 57 interceptions. Gentel, also a tri-captain, has posted 75 tackles and 80 interceptions while starting all 18 games on Bucknell's back line. One of the team's most consistent players, Gentel has been a key stopper on penalty corners.
Lafayette, Bucknell's semifinal opponent on Friday at noon, claimed Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Megan Monahan, who has a whopping 30 goals and 72 points this season, and Coach of the Year Ann Gold. American's Kate Finn was chosen as Defensive Player of the Year, while Colgate's Dana Shaner was named Rookie of the Year.
