April 9, 2007
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) shot a 77, putting her just two strokes off the individual lead, but it was an otherwise tough day for the Bucknell women's golf team as the PUPS Big South Championship got underway Monday at Coosaw Creek Country Club. Loughney, who placed T-5th and T-11th in her first two Big South Championship appearances, was the only Bison to break 85 on the day, and the Orange & Blue sit in seventh place with a team score of 343. Loughney made two of the team's six birdies on the day, and her 6-over-par 77 puts her in a tie for fifth place with 36 holes still to play. Lara Peffley of Radford has the individual lead after shooting 75, while Coastal Carolina's Araceli Felgueroso and Birmingham Southern teammates Jill Stupiansky and Jordan Hardy all shot 76. Loughney and the Winthrop pair of Jutta Degerman and Erin White are in a three-way tie for fifth. Birmingham Southern opened with a team tally of 311, two shots better than Winthrop. Coastal Carolina is third at 317, followed by host Charleston Southern (323), Radford (326), High Point (341), Bucknell (343) and Holy Cross (389). Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned in Bucknell's No. 2 score with an 85, putting her in a tie for 25th. Teri Schlang (Scottsdale, Ariz./Stratton Mountain School) shot 90, Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) shot 91 and freshman Lexie Orr (Geneva, Ill./Geneva), making her Big South Championship debut, struggled to a 109. Bucknell will be paired with Holy Cross in Tuesday's second round, which gets underway at 8 a.m.
